Marcello Lio – Head Football Coach/Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach – Villanova College School (CISAA)
Marcello Lio was brought to Villanova College in 2002 to start the school’s football program. He graduated from York
University in North York, Ontario with a Specialized Honours BA degree in Kinesiology and Health Sciences. He earned
a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Windsor.
Coach Lio has a breadth of coaching experience that includes high school, university, professional and now National
levels. He has recently been selected as Quarterback Coach for Team Canada’s Junior National Team that will be
competing in the 2014 World Championships in Kuwait this summer.
He has been the Head Coach at Villanova College School since 2003. Despite being a single A school, Villanova
College has twice received a top ten ranking in the Greater Toronto Area.
In 2006, he took a sabbatical from Villanova College to serve as the Offensive Coordinator/QB Coach of the Bergamo
Lions in the Italian Football League. The team won the IFL championship that year. In 1998, Lio also served as the
Offensive Coordinator for the York University Yeomen (now Lions).
Coach Lio played as a quarterback for York University of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association. He played
professionally in both the German and Italian Football Leagues from 1997 – 2001. During his tenure at York
University, he led the team to its first winning season in eight years. He ranks fourth all-time in York University
passing yards. After graduation, Coach Lio played four years in Nurnberg, Germany; Bolzano, Italy and finished his
playing career in Bergamo, Italy. During his last stop in Bergamo, Coach Lio quarterbacked the Lions to both Italian
and European championships.
Coach Lio has been working with and developing young Quarterbacks for close to a decade now. He has and
continues to run Quarterback development camps primarily in York Region. Since the establishment of the football
program in 2002, all five of his starting quarterbacks have been recruited to the CIS and/or NCAA level. Most notable
is Jazz Lindsey who became the starting Quarterback for the University of Guelph Gryphons in his freshman year and
guided the team to the Yates Cup as a sophomore in 2012.
